Jerry Garcia is in sweet, fragile voice and Bob Weir and Mydland harmonize nearly perfectly with him.Īs Garcia adds little flourishes of acoustic guitar, it’s clear he’s having a good time. Played acoustically - with Brent Mydland on piano, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart playing with brushes and hands, respectively, and Phil Lesh on electric bass - this “Ripple” is a doozy. The famous Halloween ’80 version - memorialized in “Dead Ahead” - is out again as part of “All the Years Live” and goes a long way toward explaining the fascination. So, in true Prankster fashion, the band performed it only some three dozen times - in 1970, ’ plus a single take in ’88 - giving fans something to complain about. ![]() The wordless coda of “Ripple” is so packed with joy, the song so revered, the Grateful Dead could’ve played it in every city on every tour and no one would’ve complained. The significance of the date and Phil Lesh’s playing notwithstanding, this performance is no standout, owing to Weir’s poor mix, Jerry Garcia’s seeming impatience during jams, general sloppiness and a vocal performance that doesn’t come near to the band’s potential at this stage of the game. The famous couplet from almost exactly 33 years hence is the subject of the band’s latest “All the Years Live” video release. Throughout the song, Weir - sporting his beloved Madonna T - is working it, but his axe doesn’t love him back until the band gets to the short “->” that leads to “I Know You Rider.” 2, 1987, his essential licks on “China Cat Sunflower” were virtually inaudible. ![]() Grateful Dead board master Dan Healy mixed Bob Weir’s guitar so low on Oct. ![]() Never trust a Prankster - particularly if he’s your sound guy. Or maybe the one on youtube is somehow different from the movie? It is more than just a concert footage it is trip tradition at this point for me, so if any of my fellow deadheads know this particular footage I would appreciate any help to no end.Song Review: Grateful Dead - “China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider” (Live, Oct. Does anyone know the one im talking about and where it is from? Maybe a different issue of the same movie? The one on youtube right now has much more nudity so seems plausible. The problem is even though they both are footage from the concert movie and are up to 60~70% the same, many parts of the video that got taken down were different and i believe changed by the uploader with different footage still from the same concert. Ah i feel like an idiot for not downloading it all these years. The one titled "china cat sunflower i know you rider sunshine daydream" - that one was just a pyschedelic masterpiece in my opinion. It is incredible aswell, but man it's just not the same. There is another version on youtube, an official one that is called china cat sunflower veneta concert. My favourite Grateful Dead footage got taken down and im trying to find it again. ![]()
